4IR & ETHICS FROM A LEGAL GENDER PERSPECTIVE

17th Congress of the European Women Lawyers Association

On 21 and 22 November 2019, the GLAC community co-created the Congress "The Fourth Industrial Revolution and its Impact on Ethics - Solving the Challenges of the Agenda 2030" organized by the European Women Lawyers Association (EWLA) in Madrid.

Following our motto "We do change!" five GLAC members joined the congress as speakers: Allen Sophia Asiimwe, Natalia Sánchez Herrera, Joni Baboci and Wiebke Koenig; and Katharina Miller, chair lady of EWLA acted as host and moderated the different sessions and panels.

Speaker's Voices

“As I head to Madrid to speak at the EWLA Congress on the 4IR Ethics and women lawyers, the reality of living in a time of automation and AI hit me full blast. From (semi) driverless, electric fueled cars, to contact card payments, self-check in counters (right up to sending through my luggage myself)- I panicked. I felt I was not ready or prepared for this. Well, I didnt miss the paperwork - those little immigration forms we used to fill in to indicate where we are going to stay. But I wasnt ready to go through the entire check in process without human contact. I missed the personal help and couldnt help but wonder, where did all the people who used to man the check in counters go? We speak of the 4IR like it's coming. But it's upon us. And many, including myself are not as prepared as we should be. I say this as a mum of teenagers, who often have to help me understand the TV remote and phone settings:-). Women, especially those over 40:-(, those in-service roles and clerical positions are likely to be affected most. But so are all the young people coming through education systems that are not evolving as fast to reflect the realities. Question is how can we in the South be more proactive instead of waiting for the 4IR to happen to us?”

Joni was overwhelmed by his experiences at the Congress: “In fantastic company at the "Fourth Industrial Revolution & Ethics" conference to discuss ethical placemaking in child-friendly Tirana. Sincere thanks to Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH's Global Leadership Academy, the  European Women Lawyers Association - EWLA Path2Integrity and especially to all the inspiring and innovative women leading change in Europe!”

“The main goals of the congress are:

  • The 4IR carries with it disruptive technologies that will accelerate processes that facilitate people's daily lives, but also important ethical challenges and a direct impact on the economy and the destruction and creation of new jobs.
  • Therefore, the congress is a framework for reflection with policy makers and business leaders to create an inclusive future and humanize technologies.
  • We want to tackle these challenges with a triangle integration approach: education, business, innovation. Only if we are innovative and human-centred we will be able to find our place within all these changes in order to foster our democracies and promote the creation of a world transition to a greener, healthier and more sustainable future.

To have the GLAC as co-organizer for this event and having my dear colleagues and friends with us made the event very special and I hope that we did a lot of change by reaching the minds and hearts of many people!”

“Thank you very much European Women Lawyers Association - EWLA and Global Leadership Academy for inviting me to the 4IR and Ethics Congress in Madrid to speak about Fintech in Africa. Fintechs are building solutions to tackle the pressing problems of the region. In only 80 years from now 40% of people on Earth will be African - today 66% of the African adult population is unbanked. This is the scale of the challenge, the opportunity and the impact. Fintechs are providing financial access and choices to millions of people for the first time. But they alone cannot solve all our challenges. After spending a couple of days with phenomenal women of law from around the world, I would like to reflect with them on the issue of regulation. How do we use regulation, for all emerging technologies, to protect and benefit consumers without stifling innovation?”
