Governance of the Platform Economy

A Virtual Fishbowl Conversation

The launching of the study "Governance of the platform economy in developing countries and emerging economies. Focus: Africa" marks the start of a conversation about the emerging platform economy in Africa.

On 7th July 2021 African tech and change makers and Dr. Sabine Müller, head of GIZ's Africa Department, discussed, exchanged perspectives and shared ideas with GIZ colleagues and passionate change makers from all over the African continent and the globe:

How it will shape the future of the continent. Are governments prepared?  What policies are needed for an environmentally sustainable and inclusive economic development in the age of the platform economy? Will we see some African societies leap frogging and leaving others behind? And most of all: what could international development agencies like GIZ offer for co-creating  solutions that harness the opportunities and mitigate the risks connected to platform economies?

We do not think we have all the answers yet. Neither does the study, but it sheds light on some pressing policy challenges and serves as conversation starter - it is available in English, French and German, for you to read (see below).
