Training for International Diplomats

Engaging in an international dialogue in order to help secure peace and ensure respect for human rights everywhere – this is the driving force behind our mission: “Diplomacy by networking”.

Since 1992 the Federal Foreign Office has been offering a broad range of different programmes. Each year, we bring together more than 300 young diplomats from all over the world to work on their professional skills, to enlarge their diplomatic network and to get to know each other. Lectures on the country’s political structure and culture, its political priorities and positions, as well as mechanisms of globalization and international relations, lay the foundations of all our programmes. Briefings with decision makers and professionals as well as soft skill trainings and German language lessons complete the agenda.

Creating a vital basis for successful global cooperation, we offer our alumni from around 180 countries a strong network, a field where we are doing a great deal of work these days. To keep friendships among participants alive and help every single participant to maintain their cooperation with contemporaries from other countries, we have developed a wide range of networking instruments. Our network provides numerous opportunities to stay connected as well as active – also after the courses have finished.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation

The Nelson Mandela Foundation

The Foundation was established in 1999 by Nelson Mandela. Its vision is a society which remembers its pasts, listens to all its voices, and pursues social justice.

Its mission is to contribute to the making of a just society by keeping alive the legacy of Nelson Mandela, providing an integrated public information resource on his life and times, and by convening dialogue around critical social issues. Dialogue as an instrument for finding sustainable solutions to intractable problems is fundamental to understanding Nelson Mandela’s legacy. In mandating the Nelson Mandela Foundation, he insisted on one of its core objectives being the creation of a space which would bring together those who think they have little in common and who might have no desire to listen to one another. Such a space has to be a safe space. This is the space in which sustainable solutions can be worked out.

Stiftung Mercator

Stiftung Mercator

Stiftung Mercator is a private and independent foundation. Through its work it strives for a society characterized by openness to the world, solidarity and equal opportunities. In this context we concentrate on strengthening Europe; increasing the educational success of disadvantaged children and young people, especially those of migrant origin; improving the quality and impact of cultural education; driving forward climate change mitigation and promoting science and the humanities. Stiftung Mercator symbolizes the connection between academic expertise and practical project experience. One of Germany’s leading foundations, it is active both nationally and internationally.

We follow an analytical, tactical and transparent approach, tackling areas of considerable social need in which we can employ our competencies to achieve impact. Given its focus on defined sociopolitical objectives, the foundation must at the same time remain open to change and to new themes and ideas. Thus an integral part of the foundation’s work involves watching out for new issues and exploring the fringes of its own areas of activity. Being the home of our founding family and our foundation, and above all a region of very advanced social change processes, the Ruhr region is the area in which application of our strategy is given preference.
